In March 1851 letter home, William's 15 year old cousin, Joseph H. Peckham, gives a brief account of taking 3 year old William to New Orleans :

"Your's of the 18th February, received by me on Wednesday, just as I was about leaving for New Orleans. I told you in my last which was written on Friday that I was about leaving for New Orleans in order to take Willy to his Mother. I had brought him and his nurse from Jackson but when we got on board by some accident too long to explain his nurse was left behind and I took him (he is only three years old) to New Orleans alone. He cried two or three times but I sang him to sleep again, and we got along admirably."
