William Smith was born on 23rd December 1858 at Luton, son of a charwoman named Mary Smith, formerly Cain, and her husband William Smith, a labourer. William appears in the 1861 census with his parents at Tower Hill, which was a courtyard of cottages on the west side of the road later called Manchester Street in the centre of Luton.

William appears to have died when he was about five years old, in 1863.
