It is tempting to connect William of Godalming with the widow Agnes Carpenter of Godalming who wrote her will in 1546, and was of an age to be his great-grandmother. However, the Visitation of London claims that William's father was from the County of Herefordshire. This might have been an attempt to claim a coat of arms Joshua was not entitled to, but the claim appears to have been accepted.
