    Verla L. Morris, 90, of Westridge Road, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at Landsun Health Service Center. Per her wishes, cremation will take place with a family gathering to take place in the summer at their favorite fishing spot. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

    Verla L. Morris was born on February 21, 1921, in Lenora, Kansas to Edward and Vesta (Shephard) Adkins. She attended school in Toppenish, Washington. She was raised by her mother and step-father, Arthur Schmidt, "they were great parents!" She married Joseph Morris on February 4, 1953, in Washington and she sorted potatoes while being a wife and mother.

    She joined her husband in their Irrigation Installation business in Oregon and Washington. They moved to Carlsbad in 1995. Verla loved to camp, fish and travel.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, grandson, Ronald Geer; 3 brothers: Virgil Adkins, Buck Adkins and Charles Adkins; 3 half-brothers: Howard Adkins, Russell Adkins and Leo Adkins. Survivors are her daughter, Vesta Geer and husband, Donald of Portland, Oregan; son, Jim Fine and wife, Jewell of Carlsbad, NM; 4 grandchildren: Lorrie Broyles, Jim Fine, Jr. and Chuck Fine of Carlsbad, NM and Joe Geer of Portland, Oregon; 5 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; half-brother, Harold Adkins of Kansas; half-sister, Rosetta Morris of Tennessee Memorial contributions may be made to Noah's Ark Animal Shelter, 5217 Buena Vista Drive, Carlsbad, NM 88220.
