Civil War Union Army Officer. He was mustered in as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company K, 29th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on July 9, 1861. He served until he resigned on January 17, 1863.

On July 1, 1863 he was mustered in as 1st Lieutenant of Company G, 44th Pennsylvania Emergency Troops. He served until he was mustered out on August 27, 1863.

On September 4, 1864 he was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant in Company A, 198th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Brevetted Captain, US Volunteers on April 3, 1865, he was promoted to full rank Captain on May 1, 1865. He was honorably mustered out with his Company on June 4, 1865.

On August 31, 1889 he applied for a United States Army Pension (Application #726072, Certificate #511416). On February 4, 1918, his wife, Clayonia B. Vogel, applied for a United States Army Widow's Pension (Application #1114526, Certificate #848117).

His son was Major General Clayton Barney Vogel, United States Marine Corps.
