Sarah Archer's origins have yet to be established for certain. One possibility is that she was the Sarah Archer who was baptised at St Paul's Walden on 6th September 1761. However, this is not considered certain. No named connection confirming the link has been found, and the parish registers for St Paul's Walden around the late 1750s are deficient.[4] Whilst the adult Sarah who was married to John Cain said she was born in Hertfordshire in the 1841 census, no record has been found specifying where in Hertfordshire. Although St Paul's Walden was the parish in which she married and had her children and died, that does not of itself mean she was born there. Moreover, her burial record suggests she was born around 1758 - in the middle of the period when the registers of St Paul's Walden were deficient.

Sarah's first confirmed sighting is on 1st November 1783, when she married a man named John Cain at St Paul's Walden. Sarah and John had nine children together between 1784 and 1802, all baptised at St Paul's Walden, although one died as a baby.

John died in 1832, aged 72. Sarah outlived him and appears in the 1841 census living in Whitwell, the main village in the parish of St Paul's Walden, with her grandson Henry and her son Thomas and his family.

Sarah died on 3rd September 1844 at St Paul's Walden. She was said to be 88 years old. Her daughter Ann was present when she died.

  4. Whereas most years there were a couple of dozen baptisms in the parish, there are only three baptisms for the period 1758-1760, with large gaps left between them (unlike the rest of the book), suggesting that someone had planned to fill in more entries, but for whatever reason did not. A note on one of these pages says "Among the Baptisms 1757 omitted..." and then gives details of two baptisms. It was therefore clearly acknowledged that some baptisms had not been recorded.
