If in actuality Samuel is the father of Alstin and was born around 1793 in NC. There are three Painters in Rutherford Co., NC in the 1810 census Jacob 22001-12011 and Leonard 10100-20100 and George 00201-10101. Leading candidates would be Leonard or George due to son the right age.

Samuel died sometime in the 1850's. After which, his wife and kids moved to Gilmer County. Apparently, Samuel and Elizabeth raised James M.'s son William.

From a copy of a page from Gilmer Heritage: "He (James M. Painter) married young and around age 22 his wife (unknown) died giving birth to his first born son William J. born June 10, 1840. With family members and friends James with his baby in his arms traveled down to Georgia.

  His father and mother went on to the west to Walker Co. taking baby William with them.  While James and others went to the mountains of Gilmer Co. to look for land."
