Samuel R. "Sam" LaRosa, 90, of McKeesport died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, at J.J. Kane Regional Center, McKeesport. Born Feb. 17, 1913, in McKeesport, he was the son of the late Salvatore and Antonina (Arena) LaRosa. Sam was a graduate of McKeesport High School and attended Penn State University. He was active in boys' work in McKeesport for many years, having started as a coach for the Fifth Avenue School basketball and track teams in 1931 and serving as a scoutmaster for the school Boy Scout troop. He organized the McKeesport Boys' Club on Feb. 23, 1945. It was incorporated on May 25, 1948, and is the first and only registered and chartered Boys' Club in McKeesport to be a member of Boys' Club of America. He served as Boys' Club president and then executive director until his retirement in 1978 and received numerous awards and citations. Sam also was a member of Rotary, Loyal Order of Moose, Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Italian Sons and Daughters of America, McKeesport Athletic Sports Association, a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus and the parish council of St. Perpetua Roman Catholic Church. He also was a member of the Youth Guidance Council of McKeesport, dealing with delinquent youths in 1950, serving many years on the council.
