5th son of the 26th Earl of Crawford The Right Honorable Sir Ronald Charles Lindsay b: 3 May 1877. D: 21 Aug 1945 He was the son of Sir James Ludovic Lindsay 26th Earl of Crawford and Emily Florence Bootle-Wilbraham Sir Ronald was a Commander of Royal Victorian Order (CVO), held the office of Under-Secretary of Finance, Egypt, 1913-19, and was made Grand Officer, Order of the Nile. Minister Plenipotentiary to France in 1920 and was invested as a Privy Counselor. Assistant Under-Secretary of State for the Foreign Office, 1921-24. Ambassador to Turkey, 1925-26. Ambassador to Germany, 1926-28. Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Foreign Office, 1928-30. Invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (OB) and a Knight Grand Cross, Order of St. Michael and St. George (GCMG). Ambassador to the United States, 1930-39. He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) by Harvard University in 1933. Sir Ronald married Martha Cameron, daughter of Senator James Donald Cameron and Elizabeth Sherman Cameron, on 18 March 1909. Martha died 28 April 1918 and was buried at Stepleton House, Irwene Steepleton, Dorset. In 1922 he married Elizabeth Sherman Hoyt, Martha's cousin. Elizabeth died in 1945. References
