Three weeks ago, in the family cemetery on Dunlap Creek, the mortal remains of Mrs. Rebecca Bracken Alexander Kean were laid to rest. Had this grand old lady lived seventy-nine days longer she would have been ninety-nine years old. Born near Union, Monroe county, W. Va. (then Va.), she married Samuel Kean, of Alleghany county, Va. in 1836. Of this union were born 9 children, two of whom, Andrew Alexander Kean, of Hematite, Va. and Elizabeth Kean Vawter, Bluefield, W. Va., survive. Many grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.

Left a widow in 1855, Mrs. Kean assumed charge of the farm, and in the face of heavy odds, reared her family. During the stormy days from '61 to '65 four of Mrs. Kean's sons fought under the stars and bars, one of whom laid down his life for the lost cause.
