(Medical):Paul had a seizure on 11 Nov 2008. The cause was determined to be brain cancer (glioblastoma malforma, the most aggressive and most deadly of brain cancers). He underwent surgery to remove most of the tumor and then had radiation and chemo treatments. In March 2009, he began more aggressive, inter-arterial chemo treatments, and in July, another chemo treatment (Avastin) was added. This combined therapy continued until July 2011 when it was decided to eliminate the inter-arterial chemo, probably because of fears that the tumor would become resistant to treatment. MRI scans in November showed no growth, and Avastin treatments were gradually cut back. An MRI in January showed no growth, but by March, the tumor showed growth toward Paul's memory center. Avastin treatments were increased, but by April, Paul developed an infection, and his platelets and hemoglobin were too low to allow treatments. Beginning in May, he began receiving blood transfusions every two weeks. On 1 Aug 2011, the cause of the problem was determined to be a syndrom which, if untreated, could lead to leukemia. Ten booster radiation treatments were recommended, but with only a 40 % chance of success to slow its growth, Paul declined the treatment because of the excruciating headaches he had experience during the original radiation treatments. His condition continued to decline, and he began hospice care in October 2011 where he remained until his death.
