Identity Uncertain

Rachel Way's first husband, Charles Richard Wilkey, was transported to Australia in 1835. On 8 Sep 1836, a Charles and Rachel (Way) Wilkey departed England on the Coromandel and arrived in Australia 16 Jan 1837[3][4]. A family descendant published an article in 2024 suggesting that the "husband" of this couple was someone who assumed the identity of Rachel's actual husband, and speculating that it was Nimrod Fry, Rachel's step-father[4]. In his application, he claimed to be 20 (the real Charles Richard Wilkey would have been 25) and a shoemaker (which the real Charles Richard Wilkey was, according to his death record)[4].

Obviously, the man who emigrated with Rachel was not her first husband. The Find A Grave memorial doesn't mention the evidence presented in the 2024 article to support the speculation that he was Nimrod Fry. However, it would likely include:

  • His gravestone says he was born in 1801 (Nimrod was baptized in 1802).
  • Nimrod Fry doesn't seem to appear in records in England after 1836. His first wife, Rachel's mother, was without a spouse in the 1841 census, and remarried by 1851.
  • Several children of Charles and Rachel Wilkey, born in Australia, have a middle name of "Fry".
