The service records of Company H, 1st Regiment (Fannin's) of the Georgia Reserves identify him as "N.G. Connell" and reflect that he enlisted May 2, 1864, at Atlanta and enrolled by Capt W.L. Hubbard for the duration of the war and that as of the date of enlistment was 47 years of age, 5 feet, 6 inches in height with fair complexion, blue eyes grey hair, and reported his occupation to be farming. These service records cover the period of May through October, 1864, during which time he held the rank of Private. The last available Muster Roll, for the period of September through October, 1864, reflects that he was absent from his unit, having been "detailed to oversee negroes burying the ded (sic) at Camp Sumpter".

Indigent Pension Application, dated April 12, 1898, for N. G. Connell, then residing in Gay, Meriwether County. The application further states that he was born in 1827 in Jasper County, Georgia and had resided in Georgia continuously since 1872. The applicant states that he enlisted in 1864 and remained with his unit for 11 months, until end of war, and that he had resided in Coweta County in 1894-95 in home he owned, which he had sold in 1896, and had paid debts and lived on the remaining proceeds and help from his children. The supporting affidavit of William Crowell, dated February 21, 1898, stated that he had known the applicant for 10 years and that N.G. Connell had been resident of Georgia for 60 years and was then supporting himself by living with children and relatives. The year of birth listed in the application appears to be incorrect, as it conflicts with his age as reported in his military service records and would result in him having been only 13 years old, when he was married in 1840.
