[edit] About Melvin "Mel" GrableMelvin Gale "Mel" Grable was born 24 January 1938 in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of Floyd Melvin Grable (1905-1975) and his wife Naomi Dreher (1909-1973). Mel played baseball in High School at C.K. McClatchy High School in Vermillion, Kansas and was a 1st Baseman. After attending Sacramento State University for two semesters, Mel Grable was a minor league baseball player that played for three seasons from 1956-1958 in Duluth, Minnesota, Dubuque, Iowa and likely other locations. He threw and batted left handed according to his minor league records. Later, Grable earned his Master's Degree in Education. After his minor league professional baseball career ended, Mel became a High School physical education teacher and Varsity Head Baseball Coach at Orange, El Modena and Villa Park High Schools in Orange County, California. One of the most noteworthy players that he coached at Villa Park High School is actor Kevin Costner, who played for Grable on his team in 1972-1973. Grable was known for his even demeanor, solid work ethic and was well-liked by his players, co-workers and students. Mel Grable died 28 Oct 2008 at an Amtrak Train Station in Browning, Glacier County, Montana. He was listed as a Retired School Administrator on his Certificate of Death. Grable's wife at the time of his passing was Terrisena [maiden name unknown]. Grable appears to have had prior marriages based upon California and Nevada marriage records.
