Facts and Events
From Judith McFadden: Lane Corley's father, John Austin, died when Lane was a child, leaving his widow in near penury, so Lane went to work when he was about 12 years old as a Texas & Pacific Railroad "call boy," the person who woke the train crews up when it was time for them to go to work. Even though he only finished 4th grade, Lane's skill with numbers and figures allowed him to succeed; he was good at calculating freight rates, and he eventually was promoted to traveling accountant for the Texas & Pacific. According to my mother, Elaine Corley Taylor, Lane and his second wife, my grandmother, Florence Daisy Bush, had four children in rapid succession and my grandmother asked if Lane could find a job that allowed him to stay at home, traveling less. So he became the station agent at Paris, Texas. I understand that he retired before or early in World War II, but went back to the working for the railroad for a time during the war. When I was a little girl, five years old about, I remember visiting the T&P Hospital in Marshall, Texas, where he was a patient before he died. Lamar County, Texas, 1920 census:[4]
