Personal History

Mary Ann Tancock was born in 1837 in Crockernwell, Devon. She was baptised on 26th February 1837 in Crockernwell. Her parents were James and Ann Tancock and the family resided at Chapels Cott, Crockernwell, in the Parish of Cheriton Bishop, Devon.

In the Census of 1841[2] the Tancock family are living in Pottery Lane, Chudleigh. Mary Ann now has 4 siblings. Harriet 9, Richard 6, James 5 and Maria 1. All the children were born in the Cheriton Bishop area including Maria aged 1 so they must have moved to the Chudleigh area between her birth and the 1841 census.

By 1851[3] Mary Ann has left home and is working at Farley Farm which is situate midway between Trusham and Chudleigh. In this census she is shown as Ann Tancock. (Not Mary Ann) She is 13 and described as a house servant. Her brother James is also living here, shown as 15 and a servant. They are working for the Archer family.

On 17th October 1859 Mary Ann gave birth to a daughter Susannah who was baptised on 25th October 1859. In the Baptism register her mother was described as Mary Ann Dyer formerly Tancock. She was registered at Newton Abbot as Susanna Tancock. Mary Ann married George 20 days after Susanna's birth.
