Mary Mountague was born on 11th April 1790 at Harpenden in Hertfordshire, daughter of John and Ann Mountague.

On 18th May 1810, aged 20, Mary married William Bent, an agricultural labourer. He was originally from Ashwell Bridge, a hamlet just north of Harpenden on the border between Luton and Wheathampstead parishes. They settled in Harpenden and had seven children baptised there between 1813 and 1828.

The 1841 census finds the family living in Harpenden, with Mary working as a plaiter. Three of their children were living with them, as well as a one week old baby boy, presumably a grandson. By 1851 Mary and William's children had left home, and they were living at Lodge Row, probably somewhere near Harpenden Lodge on Luton Road. The 1861 census does not give a specific address, but they were still in the village of Harpenden.

Mary and William both died in 1868, at about the same time. Both were buried on 13th August 1868 at Harpenden. Mary was 78 years old.
