In the 1861 Census, Mary is 18 years old, living in Old Hurlford with her father Boyd (age 46), sister Marian (age 14), and brothers Boyd (age 12) and Allan Columbia (age 9). Her mother, Jean, had died in 1856.

When she marries Samuel Croskery in 1874, she gives her age as 29, but in fact she was 31 as she was born in 1843.
