[Note: no image. Death date given as 30 Mar 1857 in Palmyra, NY. Credence given to this based on her son and daughter residing there and 1850 census showing her living there. Son's memorial page shows 4 footstones of which only his is photographed, but easily one could belong to Mary?]

  4. The very confused Source:Cooper, Marion Deane. Descendants of John Dean (1650-1727) of Dedham, Massachusetts, p. 37, apparently not realizing Polly is a nickname for Mary, gives father Jeremiah a daughter Mary b. 1768 m. Mr. Butterfield, and a Polly m. 1783 Elihu Hotchkiss. The order presented suggests Polly is younger than Mary (said to be born in Charlestown, NH, and order of children given as Mary, Nancy, ???aba, and then Polly). This might suggest a birth about 1776 for Polly based on a birth in 1774 for ???aba, but this would be ridiculous for a marriage in 1783. Further, while the marriage record for Elihu Hotchkiss shows a wife Polly (p. 78), the intention names his wife Sally (p. 97), and the gravestone also names her as Sally, d. 1843 aged 83, so born about 1760. In order words, regardless of her name (which appears to actually be Sally), Elihu Hotchkiss's wife does not appear to belong in this family, and was only placed here because she married in Petersham. Polly Dean m. 1790 Martin Butterfield of Westmoreland, NH, and had children Dean, Emeline and others, thus fitting the facts given for Mary Dean in Cooper's book based on gravestones and wills.
