Mrs. Julia Pleasants Died in Macon
Macon -- Services for Mrs Julia Olive Pleasants, mother of the late James Pleasants, a former mayor of Memphis, were held Thursday afternoon at the Macon Episcopal Church. The Rev. Cecil Jones and the Rev M.J. Peden officiated. Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery with Cockrell Funeral Home in charge.
Mrs. Pleasants, who was 78, died late Wednesday at the Noxubee General Hospital after an illness of several weeks.
Mrs. Pleasants, the former Miss Julia Smith, was born in Okolona. She was married to the late James Jay Pleasants of Clarksdale in 1906. He was a hardware merchant here for many years.
Mrs. Pleasants was a former teacher in the public school systems of Clarksdale and Okolona and was one of a group of Macon women who formed the Macon PTA in 1921.
She was an active member of the Macon Chapter of the DAR, the Study Circle and various other local organizations. She was active in the work of the Macon Episcopal Church of which she was a communicant.
She leaves a son, John Donelson Pleasants of Macon; a brother Don Houseman of Dallas, Texas; a sister, Mrs C.W. Spradling of Tchula and two grandchildren.
