Obituary of Joseph L. Tinney, Jr. in the Press of Atlantic City (NJ), April 13, 1999. TINNEY JR., JOSEPH L., Director of the televised Catholic Mass for homebound people in the new York area died suddenly on April 7th. A present day resident of Longport, he was born in Philadelphia on June 7, 1925 and graduated from St. Joseph's Preparatory School. He served as a Lieutenant J.G. in the U.S. Navy during World War II, then graduated from the University of Pennsyvlania. At age 21 he became a director at WCAU-TV. He subsequently joined the William Esty Advertising Agency where he produced the Colgate Comedy Hour. For Dancer-Fitzgerald-Sample he became program and commercial supervisor for L&M Cigarettes on "The Spike Jones Show" and for Ziv-United Artists in California, associate producer of "Highway Patrol" and "Harbourmaster." At the Colgate Palmolive Company he became manager of commercial production. He was also a long term member of the University Glee Club of New York. Mr. Tinney is survived by his daughter, Maria Dagit, son-in-law, Daniel C. Dagit, Jr.; sister, Joan Byrne and grandchildren Michael and Gregory. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial, Wednesday, April 14, 11AM at St. John Vianney Church, corner of Conshohocken State and Youngsford Roads, Gladwyne, PA, where the family will receive guests after 10am. Interment will follow as Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made in his name to St. Joseph's Preparatory School. _________________________________________________________________ Obituary of Joseph L. Tinney Jr., 73, formerly of the Overbrook section of Philadelphia, who produced and directed television shows and TV commercials, died last Wednesday at his apartment in New York City. Mr. Tinney, who also owned a home in Longport, N.J., for 30 years, most recently volunteered his services to the Archdiocese of New York and directed televised Masses to homebound people there. He was born in Philadelphia and graduated from St. Joseph's Preparatory School. He served as an officer in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and became a director at WCAU-TV, said his son-in-law, Dan Dagit. He subsequently joined the William Esty advertising agency in New York and directed the Colgate Comedy Hour while there. He then became supervisor for L&M cigarette commercials that appeared on The Spike Jones Show, and for Ziv-United Artists in California, producers of the Highway Patrol and Harbormaster TV shows. He is survived by a daughter, Maria Dagit; a sister; and two grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. today at St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church, Conshohocken State and Youngsford Roads, Gladwyne. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken.
