Joseph King was baptised on 26th March 1786 at Watton at Stone in Hertfordshire, son of John and Mary King.

On 9th October 1802, Joseph married Martha Walby in the nearby village of Aston. They went on to have a daughter called Maria baptised at Stevenage in 1806 and a son called Bartholomew baptised at Aston in 1809. They then returned to Joseph's native village of Watton where they had a son John baptised in 1812, but who died as a baby early in 1813. He was followed by a son called Joseph in 1814 and a daughter Eliza in 1817, both baptised at Watton. Several of the children's baptisms describe Joseph as a labourer.

Some time between 1817 and 1838 the family seems to have left Hertfordshire and moved to London. Joseph's two daughters were both married in the northern suburbs of London in September 1838. Both their marriages describe Joseph as a cow keeper. The 1841 census finds Joseph and Martha living at Whiskin Street in Clerkenwell, with Joseph again described as a cow keeper.

In April 1844, Joseph wrote his will. By that time he was living at 12 East Road, just off the City Road in the parish of Shoreditch. He described himself as a dairyman, and left his estate to his wife Martha and brother Thomas on trust to provide an income for Martha during her widowhood and after her death to be split between his four surviving children.

Joseph died on 28th January 1845 at 12 East Street. He was about 59 years old. Martha survived him by eighteen years.

This baptism has been linked to the Joseph King who married Martha Walby on the basis that it is around the time implied by the age quoted when he died, he had a brother called Thomas (who the adult Joseph referred to in his will), and a sister Maria, who appears in the 1851 census visiting Joseph and Martha's daughter Maria Sears in Waltham Abbey. The Joseph baptised in 1786 also had a brother with the distinctive name Bartholomew, which was a name he gave to one of his own children.
