QUAY 3 "Sad and untimely was the death of Mr. John Gaughan, which occurred on Thursday, August 23rd. The threshing machine on which he was working became choked and whilst endeavoring to remedy this, he was obliged to place himself in close contact with several belts, which were operating at lightening speed, although the power was partially turned off. Unfortunately his foot slipped, he was caught in the rapidly revolving belt, and thrown into the wheels. His arm was crushed, his neck and one leg were broken and he also sustained several injuries to the back of the head. Despite his injuries, his heart continued to beat for several minutes after he was released...
The funeral cortege, which was over a mile long, was headed by the Catholic Mutual Benefit Association, Mr. Gaughan having been a member of that society."
