Facts and Events
John Cain's origins are unknown. The age quoted for him when he died suggests he was born about 1760. It is quite possible that he was from St Paul's Walden in Hertfordshire, which was the parish in which he lived all his adult life; the baptisms register there is known to be deficient between about 1757 and 1761, with many baptisms having gone unrecorded. His first confirmed sighting is on 1st November 1783, when he was married at St Paul's Walden to Sarah Archer. John and Sarah stayed in St Paul's Walden, having nine children baptised there between 1784 and 1802, although one died as a baby. John died in 1832, aged 72. He was buried at St Paul's Walden on 6th September 1832, with his burial record noting that he had lived at Whitwell, the main village in the parish of St Paul's Walden. Sarah outlived him by twelve years. Her death certificate notes that John had been a labourer. References
