"10. John3 Boynton, (Caleb2, William1,) l>apt. in Newbury, Mass., April 19, 1676; m. _____. Is not this the Boynton who went to Conn., and 'called his name Byington?' as we find in Branford, Ct., Town Records, under date of Oct. 16, 1710, that one 'Jon. Boyington' 'entered his ear marks with a crosse on the right ear, and a half penny on the fore side of the same,' and in the Reg. of Deeds in Branford, the 'Thirty-first Day of January, Anno Domini 1720, I John Byinton, of Branford, Co. of New Haven, Colony of Ct. of N. E., weaver, 4th Division of Land made over to me by John Swain & Thomas Whedon and Eunice the wife of Thomas Wheedon etc., etc., which doth accrue to me by right of my wife Jane, Relect or widow of s'd Jno. Swain, deceased.'
Signed: JOHN BYINTON, JANE [her mark] O BYINTON.
As we have no further record of this John in Mass., it seems quite conclusive he was the progenitor of a largo branch of the family in Conn., who spell their names Byington, or Boyington."
