    .i.John Francisco;, soldier, planter, large land and slave owner, was an early settler and prominent in the affairs of Hawkins Co., TN, which was then North Carolina. In the very early years of his life, Johannes Franciscus was brought from Pennsylvania to Virginia when his parents moved from Lancaster to old Augusta Co., VA. His grandfather, .i.Christopher Franciscus;, the immigrant, had bought and sold several thousand acres of land in Virginia during his lifetime according to early Virginia records. Little or nothing is known concerning the childhood, early life, or schooling of John Francisco, but it is presumed he obtained a better than average education for the times. We judge this from his business transactions and land conveyances in which he participated or was involved. His signature appears on scores of land transactions in Hawkins Co., TN, from the year 1790 until he moved to another county in the latter years of his life. His name does not appear on any of the petitions signed by most of the active men in Hawkins Co., TN, before 1790 but beginning March 1790 he is among the list of voters for Hawkins County.
    .i.John Francisco; bought his first land, recorded on 26 March 1792, on the north side of Holston River from .i.John Ireland; in what was then known as Ceeded Territory south of the Ohio River. It was registered 3 July 1792 - Hawkins Co., TN Deed Book 2, p. 16, and also in Deed Book 3, p. 200 from old Book G, p. 16, State of North Carolina - now Tennessee. On 24 December 1792, Land Grant No. 261 was granted to .i. John Franciscus; for a tract of land lying in Hawkins Co., TN, containing 140 acres on the north side of the Holston River and signed by I. Glasgow, Sec. File No. 298 Richard Dobbs Spaight Entered 6 June 1796, Deed Book 3, page 116, from old Book K, page 8.
    On July 15, 1793, .i.John Francisco; enlisted in post-revolutionary war service which is included in the Archives as war service for the War of 1812. He entered the War of 1812 as a Lieutenant in Hall's Cavalry Regiment of Kentucky Volunteers in Company F of Captain Ezkial Hayden's Company, commanded by Major-General Charles Scott, and was mustered out November 14, 1793, at Ft. Washington.
    In 1794 he was back in Hawkins Co., TN buying up more acreage. He continued to purchase, according to land conveyances, an additional 1,400 acres of land until about 1816. Over the course of years beginning in the year 1816, John Francisco made deeds of gift "for love and affection" to his sons as follows:
    .i.George Francisco; in 1816;
    .i.James Francisco; in 1816; John Francisco in 1822;
    .i.Benjamin Francisco; in 1825; and
    .i.William Francisco; in 1836.
    Some time between 1793 and 1795 John married a daughter of .i.Mordecai and Elizabeth Haigood;. Amanda/Elizabeth was the daughter of Mordecai and Elizabeth Hagood and the granddaughter of .i.Richard and Jane Hagood; of Brunswick Co., VA(NC). No record of this marriage has been found, since records of Hawkins Co., TN, are incomplete because of destruction by fire during the Civil War. .i.Mordecai Hagood; settled in Hawkins Co., TN, in 1778 or 1779 on the Holston River about 8 miles north of the present site of Rogersville, TN, county seat of Hawkins
    County. This was the most fertile section of Hawkins County. Mordecai Haigood died in Hawkins Co., TN (then North Carolina) between 3 May 1797 and 9 October 1799, leaving no will but a widow Elizabeth who was yet alive in 1810 when she sold land in Hawkins County. Mordecai's nine heirs from the records regarding the estate settlement were:
    1. .i.Elizabeth Biggat Haigood;, wife of .i.Abraham Cocke;;
    2. .i.Sarah Haigood;, who married .i.John Henry;;
    3. .i.James Haigood;;
    4. .i.Jane Haigood;, wife of .i.Benjamin Erwin;;
    5._______ Haigood, wife of .i.Joseph Price;;
    6. .i.John Haigood;;
    7. .i.Benjamin Haigood;;
    8. .i.Diannah Haigood;, wife of .i.George Francisco;; and
    9.________ Haigood, wife of .i.John Francisco;.
    .i.Mordecai Haigood; was the son of .i.Richard and Jane Haigood; of Brunswick Co., VA, and the grandson of .i.Francis Hagood; (Hogwood, Hawkwood) of Surry Co., VA. .i.Richard and Jane Hagood; deeded land to their son Mordecai in Brunswick Co., VA on 28 August 1769 - Deed Bk. 9, page 514. .i.Francis Hagood;'s will dated 3 January 1676 was proven 1 May 1677 in Surry Co., VA - Will and Deed Books 1671-1684, page 122.
    Francis Hagood's will names children: Richard (executor of the will),
    William, George, and daughter Frances. .i.John Francisco; bought all
    the other heirs' shares of 300 acres of land belonging to .i.Mordecai
    Haigood; and wife, Elizabeth.
    We find (Amanda) Haigood Francisco was alive in 1830 according the U.
    S. census records, but had died by the 1840 census. In 1840 John was
    living with his son George and family. After the death of his wife, ca.
    1836, John deeded or sold the last of his holdings and land in Hawkins
    County and again moved southward. This time he settled in Meigs County,
    TN, where he made his home with his son .i.George Francisco ;until his
    death in 1849 at the age of 84 years. His will was dated 1 April 1840,
    Meigs Co., TN. Inventory and Journal No. 1, page 254-255; settlement of
    the estate was 2 April 1849, Meigs Co., TN Inventory and Journal Book
    No. 1, page 256. His will lists his children in the proper sequence of
    birth and disposes of his horses, slaves, and money. His land had
    already been divided and sold before he came to Meigs Co., TN. His will
    names children thusly: my eldest son, .i.James Francisco;; .i.George
    Francisco;; .i.John Francisco;; .i.Benjamin Francisco;; daughter
    .i.Elizabeth Shiflett;; son .i.William Francisco;; daughter .i.Amanda
    McMinn;.
    John is buried in the Francisco Family Cemetery in Bradley Co., TN.
    This cemetery is still in use, but only by members of the family or
    descendants of .i.John Francisco;. It is located on a hilltop
    overlooking the surrounding valleys and farms. Many graves are there.
    Monuments and markers range from new to old, and time-weathered markers
    and grave stones have withstood the rains and winds of time. Some are
    very difficult to read while others are quite legible. In 1952 a few of
    the descendants erected a tall Page fence around the entire cemetery to
    set it apart from the surrounding farm lands. It is reached by a long
    winding drive and there is a huge old metal gate. Each year it is
    cleaned off and winter ravages restored to their original condition.
    There are many old cedar trees scattered over the cemetery and although
    it's old, the cemetery is still a rather picturesque spot.
    John was baptized 21 Aptil 1765. Sponsors at his baptism were his
    parents and Johana Stauzenbergerin.
