  24. Document #2479.
  25. Application No. 5669, 31 Mar 1886, to the Land Office at Aberdeen in Dakota Territory by "John Liecht Sr. of Long Lake, McPherson County, Dakota" for the South East quarter of Section 15 in Township 127 of Range 72, containing 160 acres. A Homestead Affidavit, made at the Office of Clerk of Court for McPherson County and dated the same day, stated that he, John Leicht, Sr. of Long Lake had declared his intention to become a citizen of the U.S. and that he and his family had been residing on the land since 24 March 1886 and that improvements consisted of a house, barn and well with a total value of $85. The affidavit further states that owing to the great distance and being poor, he was unable to appear at the District Land Office to make the affidavit. [His signature is illegible]. Receipt of $14 to Johan Leicht Sr. for the land entry fee was recorded at the Aberdeen Land Office on 7 Apr 1886. His Notice of Intention to make Final Proof on his claim was dated 31 May 1892 and stated that he, Johan Leicht Sr. of Eureka, would appear on 12 July before the Judge of County Court for McPherson County at Leola, the county seat, to proove his claim. He names four possible witnesses, of which two will testify for him. The names are Christoph Schumaker, Phillipp Müller, Jackob Hoff and Fredrich Hoff, all of Eureka, SD. His signature appears on the document. Therefore, his Final Proof Notice was published for six consecutive weeks in the Eureka Independent, a weekly newspaper published in Eureka, SD, and first appeared in the issue of 2 June 1892 and concluded with the issue of 7 Jul 1892.
As appointed, on 12 Jul 1892, Johan Leicht Sr. appeared in County Court and applied to be admitted to become a citizen of the USA; thereupon, it was ordered by the Court that he should be admitted. In a Final Affidavit, dated the same day and signed by him, he applied to perfect his claim and solemnly swore that he was a naturalized citizen of the United States and that he had cultivated and resided on the land since 15 Jun 1886. Following that, he and his two witnesses, Christoph Schumacher and Philipp Ph. Muller, testified in support of his homestead entry. In his Homestead Proof testimony, Johan Leicht stated that he was age 81 years with a P.O. address of Eureka, SD, that he had no family at home, that he was a widower and had resided on the land continuously since first establishing his residence there. His house was built in May 1886 and he established residence therein on 15 June 1886. Improvements consisted of a one-story frame house 12X12 ft; sod stable 16X50; a well; 50 acres breaking and cultivated land: total value of improvements $350. (His witnesses further testified that the house was worth $100; the stable, $25-30; the well, $25-30, and the 50 acres worth $200-250). Johann had cultivated the land to crop as follows: in 1886, 3 acres; in 1887, 15 acres; in 1888, 30 acres; in 1889, 40 acres; and 50 acres each year since. His witnesses testified that he had 50 acres under cultivation and had raised crops thereon for six seasons. Johan's signature appears at the bottom of the Homestead Proof document recording his testimony. In addition, he signed a Non-Mineral Affidavit stating that, to his knowledge, no mineral deposits were on the land. Payment of the $4 balance due for the land entry was received and a Rinal Receiver's Receipt was issued 20 July 1892 at the Receiver's Office in Aberdeen, SD with a note that a 62-cent testimony fee was received for 411 words written at a rate of 15 cents per 100 words.
Final Certificate No. 2479 was issued 20 Jul 1892, which entitled Johan Leicht a Patent for the tract of land. It was approved 11 Oct 1892, Patented 31 Oct 1892 and recorded, Vol. 5, page 4751, Aberdeen Land Office.
