James Chilton's first child was almost certainly Joell, christened at St Paul's on August 16, 1584. The christening record listed him as Joell Chilton (Joell was a very unusual name) but did not identify a father. The bishop's transcripts included a burial record in St. Martin's Church, Canterbury, on November 2, 1593, which confirmed that a child named Joell was the son of James Chilton.
