McDonald was with the 8th Air Force stationed in England and at the time of his death on Feb. 28, 1945, had fifty eight combat missions to his credit. On October 1st, at Fort Worth Army Air Field, in special retreat ceremonies, Mrs. John F. McDonald (Jerry's mother) was presented the Air Medal with one silver oak leaf cluster, denoting five other awards of the air medal, for her son.

    28 February 1945 - Killed in Action.
    The mission was a fighter sweep in the vicinity of Munich, Germany. Capt. McDonald spotted and was strafing a train near Landshut when he was caught in the enormous explosion of the train and crashed and killed instantly. Capt. McDonald is buried at Lorraine American Military Cemetery and Memorial, St. Avold, France. He was from Texas.
