James Rice was born on 28th January 1886 at Camberwell in the southern suburbs of London. He was the son of Alice Rice, formerly Seagrief, and her husband James Rice, a joiner. At the time of his baptism on 23rd May 1886 the family was living at 32 Odell Street. Some time between 1886 and 1891 the family moved to Fulham, where they appear in the 1891 census living at 3 Burlington Road. Shortly after the 1891 census James's parents had a daughter, Lizzie, but she appears to have died young. James's parents did not have any other children, leaving him effectively an only child.
The 1901 census finds James living with his parents and uncle in Croydon. In 1910 James married Eliza Emily Ryder at Thornton Heath. By this time James was living on Parchmore Road in Thornton Heath and working as a laundry man. He and Eliza appear there in the 1911 census, along with two of her brothers.
James and Eliza appear to have had at least two children in the Croydon / Bromley area between their marriage and 1920. James has yet to be traced after 1920.
