James Anders McSpadden, 99, a resident of Greenville since 1898 and a former sheriff's deputy, city tax collector and assessor and cotton buyer and gin manager, died at 1 p. m. Thursday.
Mr. McSpadden died at his home at 4414 Wesley, following a three week illness.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a. m. Saturday in the Coker-Mathews-Peters funeral home chapel. The Rev. Bill Morgan Smith and the Rev. Gordon Casad will officiate. Graveside services will be held by the Greenville IOOF in Forest Park.
Mr. McSpadden was born Jan, 22, 1862, in Madisonville, Tenn., the son of Isaac and Nancy Humphries McSpadden. He came to Mexia, Tex,. from Tennessee at the age of 21 and attended Tawakoni College.
He was married to Miss Ida S Langford, Oct. 23, 1890 in Commerce. He moved to Greenville in 1806. Mrs. McSpadden preceded him in death in 1955. Mrs. Lois Jones, a daughter, also preceded him in death in 1956.
He served as deputy sheriff under three sheriffs, was city tax collector and assessor from1911 until 1915 and was with the Frank Phillips company for 30 years as cotton buyer and gin manager. He retired 15 years ago.
Mr. McSpadden was a member of the Kavanaugh Methodist church and was regular in his attendance for 60 years in the Manning Bowman Bible Class.
He was a member of the IOOF for 50 years and received the 50 year pin several years ago. Mr. McSpadden served in all offices of the IOOF with the exception of the office of Noble Grand.
He was noted for a sharp memory despite his 99 years and could remember Union soldiers stealling the winter supply of meat from his parents smokehouse in Tennessee.
Pallbearers will be Paul Mathews and Mr. McSpadden's nephews, Ray McSpadden, Kirk McSpadden, Alvin Reagan, and Douglas McSpadden.
Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Duck, Greenville, and Mrs. Bera Simmons, Wills Point; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Coker-Mathews-Peters funeral home is in charge.
