  Montpelier -- James Alton Hays, 80, of County Road 8, Montpelier, died at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, 1997 at Hillside Country Living in Bryan.  He was a retired farmer.
  Born Aug. 12, 1916 in Bridgewater Township, Mr. Hays was the son of Mary (Boyer) and Lloyd Hays.  He was married to Jane (Richard) and she preceded him in death on March 3, 1984.
  The lifelong resident of Bridgewater Township was a member of the Bethlehem Christian Union Church and the Williams County Gideons.
  Surviving are a son, Steven (Sandra) Hays of Montpelier; a daughter, Ms. Kay Barnett of Rossford; two brothers, Eugene (Helen) Hays and Homer Hays both of Montpelier; five grand children; and five great-grandchildren.
  Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Thompson Funeral Home, Montpelier.  Internment will be in Riverside Cemetery.  The Rev. Harold Dorsey will officiate.
  Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m.
  Prefereed memorials are to the Bethlehem Christian Union Church or the Gideons.
