Lenard Chancellor as we have previously seen was born in 1838. This was a year before the marriage between his parents. He appears on the 1851 census but not on the 1861 census. This matches with the records below.

Input from Chris Tucker (A descendant of the Chancellors retired and currently living in Somerset)

From family verbal records via Henry chancellor (his brother) to his grandaughter, my aunt; Leonard was born prior to the marriage of Henry and Amelia Barnes in 1839, but was acknowledged as son on census. Presumed to have served an apprenticeship at Swindon, and about 1860 emigrated to China to work on the railways there, departing from Liverpool according to Henry, who remembered the family bidding farewell at the port. Leonard wanted Henry to join him on completion of his apprenticeship, I can find no more on him, but An Alexander and Jessie Chancellor are shown arriving in this country in 1901 from Shanghai-was this his son?

Lenard emigrated to China to work on the railways in 1860. He would have been 22 at that time. Jardine & Matheson built the first railway in China called the Woosong Road from Shanghai to Wuhan which was completed in 1879. They had been the first trading company in China focusing on importing tea to England. They had offices in England and probably had to recruit people from England to work on the railway as it was being done without the consent of the Chinese Government. The same company was heavily involved in the Opium trade. The company was formed by two Scotsmen.

Fred Chancellor was born in 1844 in Swindon. He appears on the 1851 census aged 7 but does not appear on any further records. No death record has yet been found.

Thomas Chancellor was born in 1846. He is recorded on the 1851 census in the family home. There is a record of his death in Highworth in 1854 age 8.

Elizabeth Chancellor born 1840 shows up on the 1841 and 1851 census. In the 1851 census she is listed as a dressmaker. She does not appear on the 1861 census. There are several marriages listed with an Elizabeth Chancellor, but as yet have not been able to follow up.

There is some evidence of a Joseph Chancellor being born in 1843 and a death in 1857 at age 14. However he does not appear on any 1851 census, or birth record yet found so his existence is doubtful.

Suicide at New Swindon

Mr Coroner Whitemarsh held an Inquest on the body of Henry Chancellor a pattern maker aged 58 years who was formerly employed in the G.W.R. Works New Swindon where he had worked upward of 30 years and who lived at 28 Reading Street New Swindon. It appeared that up to two years ago deceased followed his trade in the factory, but at that time he became ill of pleurisy and ultimately was removed to the county asylum. Here he remained about a year and was then dischrged. He lived at home with his son who is married and appeared gradually to recover - so much indeed that he at one time contemplated returning to work. This however he did not do. On Thursday morning he got up as usual and ate a hearty breakfast and also a good dinner. In the afternoon his daughter-in-law left home to make some household purchases and he then appeared in his usual health. When she returned home, she did not see the deceased and having got no answer to several calls which she made, she, on her husband's return from work at half past five told him of the fact. He immediately went upstairs and found his father suspended by a piece of rope to the tester-rod of his son's bedstead. He was dead although quite warm. Mr Howse who was sent for, attended forthwith and found that deceased had been dead about half an hour. On examination he found the mark of a cord around the deceased's neck and it's pressure had broken the windpipe which caused death from suffocation. Mr. Howse had known and attended deceased for some years and was of the opinion that he committed suicide while suffering temporary insanity. The jury returned a verdict to that effect.

Extract from handwritten family Papers of Chris Tucker. Written by his Great Aunt

"This is mentioned because the prosperity of the Chancellor family went "pear shape" in the 1800's. John Chancellor (1783-1863) was, one would suppose, born into circumstances of substance from the evidence of family marriages etc. yet on his death in 1863 he was described as a pauper and his only surviving son Henry followed the trade as a Pattern Maker at the New Swindon Works of the Great Western Railway. He took his own life by hanging himself from the Four Poster bed of his son and wife (my grandparents) after his release from an asylum where he had been admitted as suffering from melancholia and was suicidal - his older sister Martha (Gunter) was also a patient in the Asylum and one wonders as to some inherited defect !!. His mother Catharine (Mosdell) Puckeridge b. 1782 was described in the Parish Records as being the "Natural Daughter" of Mary Puckeridge (b. 1764) whole uncle was Thomas Mosdell. John Puckeridge made particular provision for his daughter Mary Mosdell who had married Thomas Mosdell in 1767 which rather suggests something a bit "odd"- and the possibility that Mary Puckeridge b. 1784 was only a cousin of the mother of Catharine Puckeridge and another individual subsequently married to Joseph Taylor"

Amelia Barnes died in 1864 in Swindon at age 50
