Hannah Page was born around 1813 at Wellingborough in Northamptonshire, daughter of Sarah Page, formerly Hankin, and her husband Henry Page, a shoemaker. Sometime between Hannah's birth and 1827 the family left Wellingborough and moved about 35 miles south-east to Hitchin in Hertfordshire. In Hitchin they settled on Hollow Lane, on the eastern side of the town.
Hannah was married at Hitchin on 13th July 1833 to a labourer called George Pateman. They went on to have five children baptised at Hitchin between 1833 and 1842, although at least one died young. All the children's baptisms record the family as living on Hollow Lane.
George died in 1843, when he was said to be 31 years old.
Hannah remarried at Hitchin on 7th December 1846 to a widower called John Stokes, an agricultural labourer. They went on to have another six children at Hitchin between 1848 and 1859. The 1851 census finds the family living on Hollow Lane with three of John's children from his first marriage, one of Hannah's children from her first marriage and two children they had had together. Hannah was working as a straw plaiter at this time.
By 1861 the family had moved to Mill Yard and by 1871 they were living on Whinbush Lane (later called Whinbush Road) and John was no longer working as an agricultural labourer but as a lime burner. The 1871 census also records that Hannah had been blind for about three years due to cataracts.
Hannah died in 1877, when she was said to be 63 years old. John survived her by nearly 16 years and remarried in 1881.

- ↑ Hannah's second marriage record tells us that she was the daughter of a shoemaker called Henry Page and that she lived on Hollow Lane, whilst in the 1851 and 1871 censuses she gave her place of birth as Wellingborough in Northamptonshire. There was a couple called Henry Page and Sarah Hankins who had married at Wellingborough in 1803 and had a number of children baptised there up to about 1809. There then do not appear to be any further baptisms for children of this couple after 1809 at Wellingborough. In 1827 they reappear in Hitchin, having two children baptised there, living on Hollow Lane and with Henry described as a shoemaker. It is therefore presumed that Hannah was born to this couple sometime between 1809 and 1827 whilst they were not having their children baptised at Wellingborough's main parish church.
