Hannah Meakins claimed to have been born around 1825 in either Woburn or the nearby village of Woburn Sands in Bedfordshire. She also gave her father's name as James when she married. No birth or baptism record has yet been found for her.

By 1841 she had moved a few miles south of Woburn to the town of Leighton Buzzard, where she lived in the house of a painter and worked as a servant.

In 1844 Hannah married William Rowe at Leighton Buzzard. They went on to have eleven children together between 1845 and 1869. Each census from 1851 to 1881 finds the family living in Leighton Buzzard. Hannah worked as a charwoman and laundress, whilst William was at different times described as a wharf labourer, agricultural labourer, and bricklayer's labourer.

Hannah died on 31st January 1886 at South Street, Leighton Buzzard. She was said to be 61 years old. William survived her by about twenty years.
