Francis Grimke: Biographical Information

Francis Grimke and his brothers Archibald and John are the children of Henry Grimke and his slave, Nancy Weston. Francis and Archibald with the aid of their paternal aunts, Angelina and Sarah Grimke are educated first at Lincoln University near Philadelphia and later at Harvard for Archibald and Howard for Francis. Francis attends Howard University but leaves to attend Princeton Theological Seminary. In 1877, he is named assistant pastor at the Fifteenth Street Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. Both Francis and Archibald were life long civil rights activists and were associates of W.E.B. DuBois and Booker T. Washington. Francis was a member of the "Committee of Forty" which established the NAACP. Brother Archibald became the head of the Washington, D.C. branch.
