EUNICE, relict of Elisha Smith died Aug. 28, 1857, AE. 83. [Note: the memorial page reports the death date as 1859 despite a very clear gravestone and NH death record, apparently preferring the confused History of the Northfield (see note), to their own eyes?]
Name: Eunice Smith Place of Death: Winchester, N.H. Date of Death: Aug. 28, 1857 Age: 83 [birth about 1774] Sex: Female; Color: White; Condition: Married Place of Burial: Winchester, N.H. Clerk of: Winchester N.H.
Source:Temple, Josiah Howard. History of the Town of Northfield, Massachusetts, for 150 Years, p. 537, shows the father Elisha Smith marrying Eunice Grout who d. 28 Aug 1859, a. 83. First, this misreports the death date which is actually 1857 per gravestone and death record. Second, this is impossible since the implied birth date of 1774 would be 14 years after their oldest child was baptized. This source was apparently unaware both father and son had wives named Eunice, the mother dying in 1830, the wife in 1857. It is not known at this point whether Eunice Grout is the name of the mother or the wife, as the origins of neither has yet been determined. More research is needed.
