Esther Sheffield's first confirmed sighting is in 1814, when she was married at Luton in Bedfordshire to a labourer named William Smith. She later claimed to have been born in the early 1790s at 'Colney' in Hertfordshire - which could be one of a number of places belonging to the St Albans parishes.
After their marriage, Esther and William moved to North Mymms in Hertfordshire, which is very close to Colney Heath (in the parish of St Albans St Peter) and may therefore be a clue as to Esther's origins - maybe they went to live with or near her family. Esther and William had two sons baptised at North Mymms: John in 1815 and George in 1817.
Some time between 1817 and 1819, they returned to Luton, where they had another five children, although the youngest, Daniel, died as a baby. The 1841 and 1851 censuses find the family living in the Park Street area of Luton - in 1851 at a court called Smiths Yard. Esther died in 1858, aged about 66. William outlived her by nearly fifteen years.

- ↑ Esther's birthplace in the 1851 census is given as "Colney" - probably either London Colney, Colney Heath or Colney Street, all of which lie to the south of St Albans. At the time of Esther's birth, all three Colneys were in parishes belonging to St Albans: London Colney and Colney Heath were in the parish of St Albans St Peter, whilst Colney Street was in the parish of St Albans St Stephen.
