    Elizabeth (Betsy) Hypes was married to John Abel on January 22, 1793 at Fincastle, VA by Rev. Edmund Crawford. John Abel fought in the Revolutionary War. John and Betsy had only one child: Henry Abel, who was born September 21, 1793 in Botetourt County, VA. In 1800, John Abel bought lots numbered 39 & 40 in Greenville. Botetourt County, VA and in 1801 he bought lot number 39 there. He (John) was probably a brick maker by trade.

    Henry Abel fought in the War of 1812 in Captain Hannah's Company. Henry Abel was married on September 5, 1816 to Sarah Ann Franklin at Fincastle, VA by Rev John Helms. Their oldest child, Emaline Abel was born in Botetourt County on March 23, 1817. Sometime after that they moved to New Carlisle, Miami County, Ohio where another child, George W. Abel was born on August 23, 1820. William H Abel was born on August 23, 1823. Malinda and John were also born at New Carlisle. In 1838, the family moved to Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana where Maria was born on December 7 of that year. Henry was a farmer and a brick maker. He was said to have built the first Brick house in Jay County. Henry Abel and Benjamin Goldsmith laid out the town of Lancaster (later changed to Salamonia) in Madison Township in 1839.
