He was a highly respected citizen and held numerous offices of trust. He served several terms as mayor of Butler and was clerk at the time of his death. Edward Long died 10:30 Wednesday morning following a train accident at about 2:00 the previous afternoon. Edward worked for the Baltimore & Ohio railroad company. He carried the mail between the Butler Post Office and the depot and he also looked after the switch lights. On January 3, he was sweeping snow out of the switches near the Butler depot and did not hear the local train approaching. The engine struck him and cut his right leg off just below the knee. He died the next morning following an operation performed by three surgeons in the hope of saving his life.
