    8 Edward (Johnson), Mr., gent., York, an Old Planter who stated in 1676 he had liv. in this country 55 yrs.; 2d in list of those drawn to be freeman 30 Oct. 1630. Disaffected, he left Mass. for Me. at an undeterm. date; lic. by Winthrop 1632 to trade (on the Merrimac River?). Tending to confirm that he came with Robt. Gorges to Weymouth, is the fact that in York ab. 1635 when Capt. Champernowne wanted a gr. from his kinsm. Sir Ferd. G., and in May 1636 when Alex. Shapleigh wanted one, each had E. J. go to Mr. Bradbury for it. At York, he estab. his 1st home adj. Godfrey. Deputy at Saco 1640; Alderman 1641, 1651-2; Mayor 1647-8; Assoc. Just. 1650, and under Mass. 1652. Com. t. e. s. c. at York 1655, and many yrs.; Selectm. 1662, 1665, 1667, 1669-1673; J. P. 1665-8. Presented 1673 for marrying contrary to law. … Early life unkn.; he has been thot a London man, and poss. relat. to [Captain Francis Johnson].
