Since our last Mr. Charles Gilbert, mate of the brig «i»Lucy«/i», (taken by a «i»French«/i» privateer ... informs us that he, together with the other four men taken from the Lucy, were carried to Basseterrre, (Guadaloupe) which place they reached on the 11th of July. The captain of the privateer conducted them to the Commandant of the Island, for the purpose, as Mr. Gilbert supposed, of obtaining for them a pass to leave the island, but instead of obtaining one, their names were all immediately registered and themselves ordered to prison. On the 23d by the kindly interference of an American gentleman, they were allowed the privilege of a trial. By this trial they were fairly acquitted, and one would suppose would have been released and suffered to return home. But they were strictly commanded not to leave the place. Mr. Gilbert after several unsuccessful attempts at last succeeded in getting on board a vessel bound to St. Bartholomews; from which place he took passage in the schr, «i»Enterprise«/i» for N. York. While Mr. Gilbert remianed at St. Bartholomews, two of the seamen taken from the Lucy, viz. Dean Lake, and Barnabas Coombs, arrived there but were unable to obtain a passage for the United States. Ira Hoskins and Abel Demus still remianed at Basseterre. While in prison their allowance was the scanty pittance of five ounces of the very worst kind of meat, and not unfrequently little else but the bones of a hogshead. The residue of their allowance was only 7 ounces bread. There were in prison about 360 persons, among whom were about 15 native Americans. Among this number were women and children, who were treated, Mr. Gilbert informs us, in the most shameful and brutal manner possible. Verified: YES
