From "Tennessee Smithology" by Emma Barrett Reeves:

Daniel Smith, evidently the youngest son of Edward Smith; he is the subject of the Smith Family history published in 1903 by Levi Durham Smith, and it is to that cousin that we are indebted for exact dates of Daniel and his descendants. He states that Daniel was born in Virginia on 27 Feb. 1778. He married on 15 Jan. 1801 to Mary Grandstaff. They had one son, Nicholas, born in Carter County, Tennessee, then moved to Wilson County in middle Tennessee, where Daniel bought land and the rest of this family was born. He died intestate, probably before the 1840 Census. He was in the 1820 and 1830 Census, but not in the 1840.
