MRS. CLARA HAMANT STRUCK BY CAR AT DOUGLAS-LEBANON

DRIVER OF MACHINE, ELMER VOGES, ORDERED TO APPEAR AT CORONER'S INQUEST; TOW OTHERS ESCAPE INJURY; INTERSECTION RECOMMENDED FOR 4-WAY STOP.

Mrs. Clara B. Hamant, 74, of 702 North Charles Street, was killed at 7:25 o'clock last night when she was struck by an automobile at Lebanon and Douglas avenues--one of the intersections recommended by the police department for a four-way boulevard stop sign.

her death was the third traffic fatality in the county and the first in Belleville for 1941. last year the third fatality also occurred on January 9.

the car was driven by Elmer H. Voges, 19, a restaurant employee of 1100 Raab Avenue, who was released under $1,000 bond by Justice of the Peace Aloys H. Schoenenberger pending the coroner's inquest. Voges told police the car was owned by his sister, Mrs. Irene Pabst Calloway, owner of a restaurant on the Public Square.

Police said Mrs. Hamant and two other women, Mrs. William Henshaw, 7092 North Charles Street, and Mrs. Edward J. Stolbert, 707 North Charles Street, were crossing from the south to the north side of Lebanon Avenue. Apparently Mrs. Henshaw and Mrs. Stolberg were a few steps ahead of Mrs. Hamant. The three women had planned to visit in the neighborhood.

Voges, traveling west in Lebanon Avenue, told police he was driving about 20 miles an hour. He said his car missed the first two women and declared that Mrs. Hamant stepped in the path of his machine.

A witness, L.H. Raislar, 257 Lebanon Avenue, told the police that he heard the crash and saw Mr. Hamant propelled through the air for a distance of about 50 feet.

Mrs. Henshaw gave a vivid description of the accident. "We were crossing the street," she said. "Mrs. Stolbert and I were a little ahead of Mrs. Hamant. We saw the car coming from the east and we jumped toward the cub. I could feel the wind made by the car and then heard the squeal of the brakes. I looked around and saw that Mrs. Hamant had been struck."

Voges said he stopped his auto in a short distance and parked against the curb on the north side of the street.

Mrs. Hamant was taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in the Gaerdner ambulance where a physician pronounced her dead from a broken neck. Later the body was removed to the Schneider and Son Funeral Home where coroner Dr. C.C. Kane will conduct an inquest at 4 o'clock this afternoon.

Mrs. Hamant, a life-long resident of Belleville, was born on September 11, 1866, and was a daughter of the late Charles and Magdalena Bressler, nee Sattler. Her husband, August Hamant, died in 1931.

Surviving is one son, Ferdinand Hamant, 141 South Virginia Avenue, operator of a filling station at Main and 12th Streets and formerly well known tennis player. Two sons preceded her in death. She is survived by one grandchild.

the deceased was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
