Facts and Events
Charles appears on the tax rolls first on Dec. 16, 1741 then runs continuous until Oct. 23, 1758, which is the last entry for Charles or any McLain. Gail McLain has, "the lack of tax list entries for the McLain family indicates the strong possibility of their being tradesmen or craftsmen . . . The tax entries where the McLains are entered show consistently that they owned no prperty, but only paid taxes on income and poll." Appears that Charles McLain served in a military expedition to Ft. Pelham. Serving from June 28, 1748 to Sept. 4, 1748 under a Capt. Israel Williams. He appears to have re-upped on Sept. 2, 1748 to Dec. 10, 1748 under Capt. Humphrey Hobbs. Samuel Butterfield served in exactly the same periods. This from Massachusett Soldiers in the French and Indian Wars 1744-1755. Edited by Robert E. MacKay. Geneal R. 973.26M153M in the Lubbock Public Library. References
