Charles also became an agricultural labourer.
When Charles was 35 he married Maria Hornet, who was four years younger than him. They had two children together, in 1864 and 1867. Charles died after only five years of marriage, at the age of 40. He was buried at Wheathampstead on 22nd November 1868. Maria outlived him by 38 years and remarried in 1871.
