Rev. Charles Lebel

Tuesday, August 9, 2005 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Rev. Charles Lebel, missionary of Africa, 93, of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Lewiston, passed away on Aug. 1, at Northside Hospital and Heart Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Born Dec. 3, 1911, he was the son of Lambert and Anna Pelletier Lebel. He lived in Canada until coming to Lewiston at an early age. He was educated at Saints Peter and Paul School.

He studied seminary in Quebec, Canada, then in North Africa. He was ordained in Ottawa, Ontario, and served missions in Northern Ghana from 1939 to 1949. He then returned to Lewiston in 1949 and worked as a bursar, teacher, vocational director and mission animator for the next 25 years, before returning to his mission in Ghana.

He retired from active missionary work in 1995 in St. Petersburg, Fla., returning every summer to visit with family.

Survivors include a half brother, Yvon of Auburn; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; and sisters, Sister Marie-Anne Lebel SCIM and Alma Lagassee.

    LEBEL, THE REV. CHARLES E., 93, of St. Petersburg, died Monday (Aug. 1, 2005) at Northside Hospital and Heart Institute. He was born in Canada and was ordained as a Catholic priest. He moved to St. Petersburg in 1995 from West Africa, where he served with the Missionaries of Africa. Survivors include a brother, Yvon, Auburn, Maine; and a nephew, Joseph Lagasse, Lewiston, Maine.
