He was in the 26th Michigan Infantry, Company H, under the command of Captain John Sayers. Charles was from Vevay, Ingham County, Michigan. He was in Company H of the 26th Michigan Infantry Regiment(1862-1866).

A letter from Charles dated 4 February, to someone named George, describes the trip from Jackson, Michigan to the front lines near Washington. He discusses provost duty and finding troops at whorehouses and throwing them in the "slave pits.""
