Katie, as she was known to family and friends, was murdered on her way home from seeing her first grandchild, Katie Eva Campbell. She had stopped of at a corner store on her way back home; her sons didn't want to stop so they ran on ahead. She was found in a vacant lot on Texas Street, close to the cemetery the next day. She had no money so she was buried in the paupas cemetery across from the military cemetery on Virginia Street.
