He was a Union Soldier. In 1861 he enlisted in Company B, Twenty-seventh Indiana Infantry 2 and fought for the preservation of the Union for 3 years. He was at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, and in the famous series of battles from Ringold to Atlanta. At the battle of Winchester he was taken prisoner and for 4 months was an inhabitant of the loathsome prisons of the South. After his return home he attended school for some time. Both he and wife were members of the Christian Church and he was a Republican. He purchased 40 acres in 1867 and later owned a total of 240 acres.

Info from geocities.com/pentagon/barracks/3627/companyb regarding the 27th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment states that Andrew J. Vest enlisted at age 18, from Daviess County, was listed as a farmer. He was a POW at Buckton Station, imprisoned at Lynchburg & Belle Isle Virginia. He contracted scurvy, and was paroled at Aikens Landing Virginia 13 Sep 1862, Camp Parole Annapolis Maryland, and Washington D.C. 23 Sep 1862. Hospital Dam No 4 Maryland. United States Army General Hospital Camp at Frederick Maryland. Returned to regiment 16 Feb 1863. Mustered out.

Died Canyon City Colorado 24 Dec 1927, buried Walnut Hill Cemetery, Odon, IN (1127).
